2006 FOIRE de la POMME - VIMOUTIERS - FRANCE

That we got an invitation to the “64th Foire de la Pomme” at Vimoutiers; Normandy; France (Festivals of apples & cider), was through the serendipitous chance that Mike Palmer lodged his caravan at “Les Noyes” (the nuts) at Lisores with Adam & Anne Bland the site owners; ex pats of some 16 years, & then heard of the festival. Mike had a word with the Mayor & as we fitted with their 2006 theme of “The Sea” (through the ESMM logo), got the invite to take part.

Sixteen of us traveled, five in the advance party to get the site ready & put up the tents (if all else fails, read the instructions!).

When the others arrived on Friday & settled into their tents, caravans & B&Bs, we had a short tour of the area taking in the historic site the Falaise – Chambois Pocket where the decisive battle of WWII was played out with the defeat of the German 7th Army aided by an historic stand by our Polish allies.

Then to a local cheese factory for a tour and then samples of the local produce.

On our first night, the advance party had a marvelous diner at Les Noyes and were introduced to the local cider, aperitif and calvados. So impressed, we negotiated with Adam for the whole group to eat there on Friday – which was another excellent meal, followed by a singsong.

Saturday was the first day of the Festival. The town was full of stalls & fairground rides. We met our guide Olivier (who spoke no English but was very attentive) & we set off to the Marie (Town Hall) where there was no-one (too early). Onwards around town we met with the other visiting group from Poland – a group of brass & marching band with dancing majorettes. We were guided around town dancing occasionally, but following the Mayoral tour examining the prize cattle, produce & Festival tableau - a boat covered with apples what else?

Outside we enjoyed the fair and Billy found a roundabout with real horses. More dancing around town, a meal at the local convent school, then a session of song & dance at Bar le Penalty.

Sunday saw a sluggish start, but soon many groups – mainly brass bands, assembled & marched around Town. This was the big parade day & we competed against their music and the noise of the fairground. Lunch was provided in the Market Hall where all the bands gathered & competed in chants & anthems. This was a great musical impromptu session & an experience not to be forgotten.

On to the big parade which ended the Festival. This turned out to be a procession around town of some couple of miles & one and a half hours duration which was a bit tiring & sore on the dancing feet.

The wind-down around the bars was very enjoyable as was the Sunday evening meal at Les Noyes followed by a sing-song joined by Adam & Ann to whom we owe a great vote of thanks for making our stay so welcoming.
